Homemade Shelves

With a toddler running around trying to throw everything and reach for anything within reach, I needed a plan--as always I headed to Pinterest for some inspiration.

I found these lovely DIY reclaimed barn wood shelves from Bullfrogs and Bulldogs. I knew I wanted to do something like this for our great room and I had the perfect wall.

I didn't have reclaimed wood and a search on Craigslist came up short, so instead I took a trip to Home Depot and had a large piece of 8' wood cut in half (they will cut it there for you--easy peasy). While I was there I picked up some large L brackets and screws that would fit.

I came home and started to stain. I went with Dark Walnut because I am obsessed with this stain, but really any shade would work. (Note: I stained all sides of the wood. It looks like she didn't touch the sides.) B&B kept the L brackets silver, but I didn't. Instead I spray painted them oil rubbed bronze (your choice).
Honestly, the hardest part was finding a stud on our wall to screw the L brackets into. Once we finally located them, it was smooth sailing. I also decided to hang out shelves a little differently. All in all--two 4' shelves all for under $10! I'll take that any day.

Here they are! I just have to touch up a little with some spray paint and paint the silver nails oil rubbed bronze to match, but that will take 2 seconds. What do you think?
